Foreword: The role of technology in veterinary care

We are living in a time where technology is advancing at an incredibly fast pace and barely a day goes by where we don't read something in the news about artificial intelligence or other emerging technologies. While that can be exciting, I hear from some readers that the pace of change can be slightly alarming and there is some fear around what new technology will mean for those working in veterinary practice. This supplement will help to explain these technologies, alleviate some of these fears and ensure that our readers are staying up to date with the latest advances in technology to support best practice.

First, Oliver Viner (p4) looks at how software can save time in veterinary practice, highlighting the important point that those working in the veterinary industry are only going to interact with more technology over time. Hannah Godfrey (p8) then covers how advances in point-of-care testing have improved veterinary patient care and can speed up clinical decision making. Finally, Harriet Ash Oliver Broome (p15) looks at the role of artificial intelligence in veterinary diagnostics – a popular topic – considering future uses and limitations.
